Work for the Dole restores youth and rural fire centres
30th September 2008
Roger has congratulated an Australian Government Work for the Dole team that undertook maintenance works at the Whalan Police Community Youth Club and Rural Fire Service centres in Kingswood and Oakhurst.
The six-month project saw team members landscaping, gardening, and completing carpentry works as part of their Work for the Dole activities. The team contributed a great deal to the local community.
This has been a terrific project. The PCYC plays a vital role in western Sydney, providing the local youth with fun and dynamic activities in a safe environment, and of course rural fire brigades are an essential part of every community.
The project has allowed team members to develop skills in landscaping, carpentry and general maintenance, while working closely with two valuable local organisations.
With their new work skills and experience working in a team and liaising with the community, team members are in a better position to take up future employment opportunities.
UWS Nursing to receive 65 new places
29th September 2008
The Australian Government’s announcement today to provide the University of Western Sydney with 65 new nursing places which will become available from 2009.
The Australian Government is delivering on its election promise by providing our community with a chance to benefit from more nurses in our hospitals. These added places will allow local students to qualify as registered nurses and help take the pressure of Australia’s hospitals.
UWS will received an additional 15 post-graduate places for Master of Nursing (Mental Health Nurse Practitioner)/Graduate Diploma in Nursing (Mental Health) and an additional 50 undergraduate places for Bachelor of Nursing.
The extra places are part of the Australian Government’s 2008-09 Budget Health and Hospitals Reform – Health Workforce Initiatives. In total, 310 places have been allocated to higher education providers in NSW.
Mr. Turnbull ignores 14,344 pensioners in Chifley
22nd September 2008
Mr. Turnbull and the Liberal/National plan to introduce a bill in the Senate this week which would exclude 14,344 local pensioners in Chifley from a pension increase.
The new Opposition Leader had a chance to demonstrate his credentials as an alternate Prime Minister but the Coalition would rather play politics with pensioners with a cheap stunt that excludes 2 million pensioners around Australia from a pension increase.
In contrast, as a result of Australian Government measures, all age pensioners, singles and couples, carers, veterans and disability pensioners will this week receive the next $128 installment of their annual $500 Utilities Allowance.
The regular pension indexation increase kicks in this week, it is $15.30 per fortnight for singles.
The Liberal-National Coalition had 12 years to fix the pension system properly but did nothing. Last year the Howard Cabinet actually voted against raising the base rate of the pension.
The Australian Government is determined to give pensioners the long-term support, certainty and security they deserve. The Government has made a down payment on reform by increasing the Utilities Allowance from $107 to $500, and extending it for the first time to carer payment and disability support pensioners.
Disabled Children to benefit from Education Revolution
19th September 2008
The Rudd Government has announced greater flexibility to the second round of the National Secondary Schools Computer Fund for Schools with disabled students.
Schools with disabled students may choose to access a different approach within the Fund to promote greater independence for these students, enabling them to participate to a greater extent in digital learning environments.
Schools will have the flexibility to purchase ICT equipment that best supports the learning needs of students with disability, such as multimedia resources, interactive white boards, adaptive devices and interface software.
The Fund is part of the Rudd Government’s commitment to delivering a world class education system to build a stronger future and a fairer Australia ready to face the challenges of a globally competitive world.
Local Student receives Australian Student Prize
9th September 2008
Roger Price has today presented Howard Fan with the Australian Student Prize for Academic Achievement at a ceremony in his Electorate Office.
This Prize is only awarded to 500 students Australia-wide so it is fantastic to see a local Blacktown student recognised for such an exceptional achievement.
I am pleased to note that Howard went to Blacktown South Primary before going on to James Ruse.
He is currently studying Medicine at the University of New South Wales. I hope he successfully completes his studies and practices in the West.
Australian Student Prizes are awarded annually across Australia on the basis of recommendations from the State and Territory Education Ministers. Each winner receives a certificate and $2000.
The Australian Government is committed to ensure Australia’s education system gives all students the chance to perform to the best of their ability and is pleased to recognise and reward excellence and achievement in our schools.
